The Meuse-Argonne offensive was a joint operation (American and French) in the Meuse with the objective of reaching the rail centre of Sedan. The Americans faced the most difficult natural obstacle: the dense Argonne forest. On September 26, 8 U.S divisons attacked followed by many others in the following weeks. More than a million American soldiers participated in the battle but eh A.E.F casualties were very heavy: it was the deadliest battle in American history. We will visit the « Butte de Vauquois », a very well preserved battlefield and walk in the original trenches, the Montfaucon monument and the numerous German bunkers, the Meuse-Argonne American cemetery. Driving through the Argonne forest we will stop at the « ravine of the Lost Battalion » and the site of Sgt. Alvin York’s exploit. There is so much to see in this region…
