Tour d'Ulster
Somme

The Ulster Tower was inaugurated in 1921 and is an exact copy of St Helen’s Tower in Clandeboye, County Down, which is situated close to where the Ulster Division did its training in 1914-15.
On the 1st July 1916, the Ulster Division was the only division north of the Albert-Bapaume road to penetrate into enemy trenches. Within 1 1/2 hours five lines of German trenches had been taken, but they were unsupported and forced back by the fierce German counter attack. There were more than 5000 casualties during this attack.
