Rancourt - Somme
Chapelle du Souvenir Français
et nécropole française
The Bos family had the Chapel of Rancourt built in memory of their son and his comrades who died during fighting on the 25th September 1916. The Souvenir Français took over the running of the memorial in 1937.
The Rancourt Cemetery is the largest French Cemetery on the Somme - 8566 soldiers and 28,000 m2. It is testimony to the violent fighting of the three last months of the Battle of the Somme.
The objective, when Rancourt was taken, was to take the offensive to the East and break an important German communication line -the Bapaume-Péronne road.
This was the mission of the 32nd Corps of the French Army on the 25th September 1916.
