Mémorial à la division galloise
Cutting through the Fricourt salient from the South, the 7th Division took over the village on the afternoon of the 1st July 1916. The name of Mametz is forever linked to the wood which is situated to the North-East of the village. The resistance in this area was to slow all progression towards the East. Eventually, on the 12th July 1916, the 3rd Welsh Division managed to take it - it cost eight days of heavy fighting and many, many causalities.
The memorial to the Welsh Division is an impressive Welsh Dragon, looking over the battlefield. It was inaugurated on the 11th July 1987. To get to the memorial follow the ‘Chemin des Gallois’ ’The Welshman’s path’ from Mametz village.
