Manfred von Richtofen - Baron Rouge
Fricourt - Somme

From the age of 12, Manfred von Richthofen was enrolled in a military school at Silesia and then at Lichterfede military academy at Potsdam. He left this academy as a Cavalry officer in 1911. When war broke out in 1914, Manfred was sent to the French Front and like many others from the Cavalry asked to be transferred to the German Air Force.
He flew for the first time in July 1915 and joined the Jagdstaffel II Squadron. He became commander of this squadron in 1917 before forming a new fighter unit – Jagdeschwader.

Von Richtofen filmed about to leave on a mission at Cappy Aerodrome.
The very aristocratic Manfred von Richtofen was the terror of the skies between 1914 and 1918, with 80 kills. He was nick-named The Red Baron after the colour of his Triplane. The whole squadron painted their planes bright colours, and was known as the Flying Circus.
At the end of March 1918 the squadron was based at Cappy. On the 21st April he was shot down by Australian Machine Gunners. His plane crashed near Corbie at the Brickworks. He was buried with full military honours by the Australains at Bertangles. In 1925 he was transferred to Fricourt German Cemetery and then later his remains were taken back to his home town of Wiedbaden. There are four panels explaining his history at Cappy, Vaux sur Somme, Bertangles and Fricourt).
