Remembrance Circuit 'Somme 1916'
"The 1st July 1916 marked the start of a huge Franco-British offensive. It was the first massive conflict on French soil for troops from the British Empire. English, South Africans, New Zealanders, Scots, Canadians, Welsh, Irish… and of course French and Germans were all to know the hell of the Battle of the Somme.
On the first day, huge losses were suffered. The battle continued until November, until finally ending at the gates of Péronne. In just over four months of fighting, there were more than 1,200,000 victims.
After the German retreat in 1917, the Somme was again to know terrible fighting - the German offensive and the allied counter attack of 1918 finished off this already devastated area."
